What To Look for When Choosing a Photographer for Events?

Events photography is all about capturing those special moments that tell the story of your event. So you want a photographer who can truly embrace the spirit of your event and feel like a part of the fun. Look for someone who can blend in with the crowd and capture real, authentic moments.

Here are a few tips for picking an events photographer:

  • Look at their past work to see if you like how they capture events.

  • Read reviews from past clients to see what they say about working with the photographer.

  • Schedule a consultation call with the photographer to see if you get along and feel comfortable.

  • Talk about your event and what you want them to capture.

  • Make sure their price fits your budget without any hidden costs.

  • Ask if they have experience with events like yours.

  • Check if they have good equipment and a backup plan in case something goes wrong.

  • See if they are available on the date of your event.

How Many Photos Should You Get From an Events Photographer?

When you hire a photographer for an event, most of them will limit the number of pictures they give you. But at Celeste Drake Photography, you get all the best photos from your event. This means you have tons of pictures to choose from and won't miss any key moments. Whether it's a big smile, a funny dance, or a heartfelt hug, you’ll have all the special memories captured.

How Do You Brief a Photographer for an Event?

Briefing your photographer ensures they know what to expect and can do their best work. This helps them prepare to capture all the special moments you want.

  • Share the event schedule so they know when things are happening.

  • Point out key moments you want them to capture, like speeches or performances.

  • Tell them about your style preferences, like candid or posed shots.

  • Introduce them to important people they should focus on.

  • Give any special instructions, like specific group photos or themes.

  • Let them know about any surprises or unique elements at the event.

  • Make sure they know the location and any rules they need to follow.

What Is the Average Event Photography Pricing?

The average price for events photography ranges from $150 to $400+ an hour, depending on where you live, the kind of event you are having, and the photographer’s experience. In Los Angeles, prices can vary a lot based on the type of event and how long you need the photographer. For example, a small birthday party might cost less than a big wedding or corporate event. The longer the photographer stays, the more it can cost. Always check what’s included in the price, like the number of photos and any extra services.

At Celeste Drake Photography, my event photography packages include a minimum of 4 hours of photography for corporate conferences, events, galas, and office parties starting at $1,200. For family gatherings, my packages start at $300 for the first hour and $200 for each additional hour. I don’t cap the number of photos you get, and they’re available online as a personalized gallery!

When To Use Events Photography?

You should hire an events photographer for any gathering you want to remember without having to do it yourself. If you want to be present in the moment, a photographer can capture those memories for you.

For example, enjoy the cake and games at a birthday while the photographer takes pictures of everyone having fun. At weddings, focus on saying "I do" and dancing, knowing all the special moments are being documented. Family reunions are great for event photography because you get to relax and chat with relatives you may not get to see often while someone else takes care of the photos.

For corporate events, hiring a professional photographer offers key marketing benefits. High-quality photos can enhance your brand image and be used in brochures, newsletters, and press releases. Sharing these photos on social media and your website can attract potential clients and partners by showcasing your company's professionalism. Having a collection of great photos supports your overall marketing strategy and helps your brand stand out.

At Celeste Drake Photography, I have experience with LA event photography for all sorts of gatherings, including non-profit events, galas, birthday parties, and corporate events (such as the fabulous events you see throughout this blog!).

What Style of Events Photography Is Best For My Event?

The two main styles of photography are documentary-style and portrait photography. Both have their place, but documentary photography is typically best for events because it captures real, candid moments and tells the story of what's happening.

Using this style, the photographer takes pictures of people as they are without making them pose. It’s perfect for events because it shows emotions and interactions naturally. Whether someone is laughing, hugging, or dancing, documentary photography catches all those special moments just as they happen.

This helps you remember the true essence of your event and see the genuine fun and feelings shared by everyone there. Of course, even with this type of events photography, your photographer can capture a few quick posed shots so make sure you get all the images you want.
