Newborn Photography Ideas and FAQs

First, let’s dive into some common questions to help you pick your favorite newborn photography ideas. (I answer even more questions and tips for keeping your baby safe in this article about newborn photography.)

What Color To Wear for Newborn Photos?

Stick to soft, neutral colors like whites, creams, and pastels to keep the focus on your baby. These shades create a timeless, serene look that enhances your newborn’s delicate features. Avoid bold patterns or bright colors that can distract from the star of the show!

What Should I Put My Newborn in for Pictures?

Keep it simple with a plain onesie or just a diaper to capture their natural beauty. Soft fabrics and neutral tones are your best friends here. And don’t forget, cozy swaddles and cute accessories like hats or headbands add a sweet touch!

What Does Mom Wear for Newborn Photos?

Go for comfortable, neutral-colored clothing that complements the baby’s outfit without stealing the spotlight. Think soft fabrics and minimalistic designs that help create a cohesive look. Most importantly, wear something you feel great in because your comfort will shine through in the photos.

Who Should Be in Newborn Photos?

While the star of the show is, of course, your baby, it’s definitely okay to have a few β€œsupporting characters” make appearances in the photos, too! Whether it’s mom, dad, or siblings, or even your dog(!), these special moments are something for everyone to enjoy. Just remember to keep the setting relaxed and intimate so your newborn feels secure and happy. And make sure everyone is dressed in complementary colors to maintain a cohesive look.

Where To Take Newborn Photos?

Newborn photos can be taken in a variety of cozy and intimate settings around your home. The key is to choose a space with good natural light and a neutral, clutter-free background.

  • On the bed with pretty bedding (remember, neutral colors and patterns)

  • Create an indoor studio-like environment with soft backgrounds and props

  • Use a comfy couch or armchair with a cozy blanket (a rocking chair is always precious)

  • Near a large window for beautiful natural light

  • In a nursery setting that reflects your baby’s new world

What’s most important is that you and baby are comfortable.

5 Newborn Photography Tips for Parents

As a professional newborn photographer, I’ve spent a ton of time working with parents to get the best shots of their babies. Here are some of the best newborn photography tips I’ve gathered along the way.

1. Plan Ahead for the Perfect Timing

Newborns grow incredibly fast, so scheduling your photo session to take place within the first two weeks is key. This is when they are sleepiest and easiest to pose. Planning ahead helps make sure you have everything you need on hand. Think about props, outfits, and settings well in advance to avoid any last-minute stress. (For all my newborn sessions, I work with you to schedule a few different days around the due date in case baby is early or late.)

2. Keep Your Baby Comfortable and Safe

Your baby’s comfort and safety should always be the top priority during a photoshoot. Use soft, cozy blankets and pillows to keep them snug. Make sure the room is warm enough, as newborns can get cold quickly.

Also, never force your baby into a pose that seems uncomfortable or unnatural. A happy baby makes for the best photos! That’s why I always bring an assistant with me to newborn sessions, so I can focus on capturing the perfect pictures while they focus solely on your baby’s safety.

3. Good Lighting Is Your Best Friend

Natural light creates a soft, beautiful glow that enhances the delicate features of a newborn. But homes are often too dark. That’s where a lighting setup comes in handy. A professional photographer can help you choose the best time of day to get the vibes you want β€” whether bright and airy or darker and moodier. And if there isn’t a lot of good lighting in your home, they can bring additional lighting to capture the beauty and emotion of your baby.

4. Incorporate Personal Touches

You can make your newborn photos even more special by including meaningful items or family heirlooms. This could be a handmade blanket, a favorite stuffed animal, or dad’s wedding ring around baby’s tiny foot. These elements make your photos unique and tell a story about your family.

It’s best to think about what type of props you might want ahead of time so you can get them before the baby comes. That way, everything is ready when it's time for the photo session. If you need ideas, head to Pinterest or Lemon8 for inspiration!

5. Be Patient and Flexible

Newborns are unpredictable, and they run on their own schedule. Be prepared for breaks for feeding, changing, and comforting. Patience is key to getting those perfect shots. Don’t rush the process; take your time and go with the flow. (This is why I schedule all my newborn photography sessions for a minimum of two hours!)

Turning Newborn Photography Ideas Into Reality With Professional Photography

Here’s the thing: DIY newborn photos are absolutely doable. If you're in your second trimester and feeling full of energy, planning it all out might seem like a fun project! But there's a good chance you won't feel up to it after having your baby. (And it will be hard to book a professional photographer last minute.) Instead of risking missing out on capturing those precious first days, consider hiring a newborn photographer now.

At Celeste Drake Photography, I specialize in turning your newborn photography ideas into a stunning reality, ensuring you have beautiful memories to cherish forever. Don't miss out on preserving these fleeting days β€” book your newborn photography session with me today!
